Ten years of the same three fundamentals

Every couple of years the vocabulary rotates. New acronyms, new dashboards, a new category of consultant. Ten years in, the work underneath has barely moved.

Three things keep deciding the outcome.

Clean entity signals. Machines — crawlers then, models now — need to resolve who you are, what you offer, and how your pages relate. Most sites still leak this: inconsistent names, duplicated templates, three versions of the truth.

Original material worth citing. Search engines ranked pages; answer engines quote sources. Both economies pay the same currency — something true that exists nowhere else. Commodity content never earned links, and it doesn't earn citations either.

Conversion paths that respect a reader's time. Being found is half the job. The page that gets the visit still has to answer quickly, prove it, and make the next step obvious — to a person who was mid-task when they arrived.

The labels on this work keep changing, and the changing labels keep the industry interesting to watch. The fundamentals, inconveniently, keep not changing. That's the whole note.
